In the GO! section of todays Portland Press Herald, Zach Jones was named as one of the 10 Maine artists to watch for 2010.
ZACH JONES
Folks in the Portland area are familiar with Zach Jones because of his stints as guitarist and vocalist in the local rock band As Fast As/Rocktopus. The 28-year-old Jones moved to California last year, but hasn’t forgotten his home state and his fans here. When he self-releases (“My parents became my record label,” he said) his debut solo album, “Fading Flowers,” on March 16, he plans to be in Maine for a rocking release party (details are in the works). Go to zachjonestunes.com to check out what he’s been up to since moving to the West Coast.
Fading Flowers is beginning to see its first wave of press with album tracks being spun on Spinout on WCCY 94.3 and on WCLZ 98.9 as well as a a mention in the Sibilance section of last weeks Portland Phoenix. Here is what they had to say:
• Long-time sideman ZACH JONES, he of the buttery guitar in AS FAST AS, the PETE KILPATRICK SUPERGROUP, and others, will take to the spotlight March 16 for the release of Fading Flowers, his debut solo disc. He wrote and recorded it in San Francisco after moving there in early 2009, with help from AS FAST AS mate ANDREW HODGKINSon drums and everyones bassist, STU MAHAN. Expect plenty of classic rock and R&B sounds. No word yet on a release show.
Big CD release show plans are in the works. Stay tuned for more details.

Zach Jones’ Fading Flowers musically chronicles his journey of closing one chapter and starting over, reflecting on lessons learned while building a new life 3,000 miles from home. Pulling from Jones’ real life experiences, this highly personal album manages to speak to larger universal truths, like the complexity of relationships and the challenges of facing new obstacles when youve only got yourself to rely on. With guitar-driven rock songs like the Foo Fighters-flavored ‘Easy Way Out’ or Kinks-esque ‘3,000 Miles’, to the soulful longing and loneliness of ballads ‘Back Home’ and ‘Sweet Insomnia’, Jones’ powerful, poetic, honest lyrics combine with passionate vocals and expressive rhythms to explore the highs and lows of starting anew.
Combining classic rock with vintage R&B grooves and power pop hooks, Fading Flowers explores themes of geographic and personal change based on Jones’ own move from Portland, Maine to San Francisco, California, where he found himself for the first time away from his network of friends, family and the comfortable predictability of home. Often mirroring Elvis Costello’s rapid-fire vocal delivery, Jones sings Beatles-inspired melodies wrapped in Beach Boys harmonies and Motown soul backed with his distinctive guitar playing and a dynamic rhythm section to create a unique modern rock sound.
Having toured tirelessly as lead guitarist and backing vocalist for the band As Fast As, Jones is no stranger to the world of rock and roll. Along with his AFA band-mates, Jones has appeared on stages across the country at venues such as New Yorks Irving Plaza, Denvers Fillmore Auditorium and San Franciscos Warfield Theater opening shows for the likes of Maroon 5, OAR, Butch Walker, INXS, Gavin DeGraw, John Fogarty and more. With Fading Flowers, Jones makes his debut as a solo artist.
